The Last Car

2025S

The Last Car is a monument that speaks to the transformation unfolding in our cities. As we reclaim urban space and rethink how we move, connect, and live, the privately owned vehicle fades into the past. What once felt inevitable is now being actively reimagined.

On September 15th, 2070, Vienna officially decommissioned its last privately owned car. But the change didn’t happen overnight. Streets once gridlocked with traffic are becoming walkable gardens, vibrant public spaces, and open corridors filled with light and life.

The monument is built around an anamorphosis. Viewed head-on, it shows five parked cars. As you move around it, the image breaks apart, dissolving into abstract shapes with benches—spaces to sit, reflect, and engage.

This is not a monument to a single car, but to the countless vehicles that once filled Vienna. It marks what we’ve moved on from—and celebrates the new city we’re building together.
