Tangible Surroundings

2024W

While observing my surroundings on public transport, I noticed that smartphones seem to be a quick solution for bored children of all ages. What really concerned me was seeing the rising numbers of parents offering their toddlers digital devices as a ‘sedation measure’.

Through interviewing a psychotherapist who specialises in children and addictions, the objective of making their surroundings tangible emerged. The outcome: three toys that each use different physical influences you experience on public transport.

The ‘see-saw balance’ makes you counter the acceleration and braking force to keep a ball inside a certain area. The ‘pole grip hoop’ clips onto poles on buses and trams. ‘Adventure course’ is an interactive game with interchangeable modules that allow you to build your own track.

When asked whether I can compete against smartphones, my answer is yes. Offering an alternative raises children’s interest in their environment and fosters meaningful engagement with the physical world.
